Pic 50: The lower deadeyes in place. I think most kits fall short here - you can fit a brass ring round the deadeye, fine, but as soon as you thread the first link of the chain on to it, the ring no longer fits into the groove at that point and the assembly goes lopsided. So I used a tiny burr to drill out a minute piece of the deadeye to make room for the top link of the chain. If you do this, remember that the notch mustn't show at the front, and that each deadeye is specifically orientated, so the notch must be in the right place. But you do get much nicer-looking deadeyes.
